Monogram Cut Files for CNC Plasma

If you only ever learn to sell one thing off a plasma table, make it monograms.
The reason is simple and it is worth stating plainly: a personalized sign cannot be price shopped. A customer looking at a generic mountain scene can open another tab and find one cheaper. A customer looking at a mountain scene with their own family name through the middle has exactly one place to buy it, and that is you.
Same cut time. Same steel. Several times the price, and no argument about it.
What a monogram actually is
For a plasma shop, a monogram is a design built to accept a name. The artwork stays fixed; the text slot changes for every customer. You draw it once and sell it forever.
The common forms:
Split font. The name runs through the middle of the design, with the first letter split large either side. This is the classic and it is still the best seller.
Circle or round monograms. Name arched around the inside of a ring, artwork in the middle. Works on doors, fences and shop walls.
Family name with a scene. "The Miller Family" under a mountain, a tree, a deer, a lake. Sells hard in rural and cabin markets.
Address signs. House number plus family name. Steady, unglamorous, and people replace them when they move.
The workflow is the whole skill
Cutting a monogram is easy. Getting the name in cleanly, at speed, without breaking the design, is the part that separates a shop that makes money on this from one that dreads every order.
The rules that matter:
- Every letter has to connect. A floating counter — the middle of an O, the hole in an A — falls out on the table and lands as a loose part. The design has to bridge those, and if the customer's name has three Os in it you will find out the hard way.
- Convert text to paths before you post. If the file goes to the machine as live text and the machine does not have that font, you get something you did not draw.
- Check the name at the size you are cutting. Thin strokes that look fine on screen turn into a blow-through at 14 gauge. There is a minimum stroke width for every material thickness and you learn it once.
- Confirm spelling in writing. Not on the phone. In writing, from the customer, before you cut. This is the single most expensive mistake in personalized work and it is entirely avoidable.
Pricing
Charge for the personalization, not just the metal. A blank version and a named version take the same machine time, but one of them is a custom piece and the other is a decoration.
A practical structure: base price for the design, plus a personalization fee, plus a rush fee if they want it inside your normal turnaround. The fee is not for the work — it is for the fact that nobody else can make it.

Take a deposit
Custom work that gets cancelled is scrap. A sign with somebody's surname on it has one possible buyer, and if they walk you own a piece of steel with a stranger's name on it.

One last thing
